Reaffirming our support for undocumented students

Reaffirming our support for undocumented students As many of you know, there has been a lot of uncertainty in the United States since the election last month, with many students sharing their hopes and fears regarding the new administration, and many faculty articulating and affirming values they share  as educators. In President Reifs letter to the community on November 9, the day after the election, he wrote that Whatever may change in Washington it will not change the values and mission that unite us. One subject of uncertainty since the election has been the educational prospects of undocumented students, including (but not limited to) those who are registered for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Since 2012, when the program was launched, we have admitted and enrolled students with DACA; in 2014, the Tech profiled Jose G. 17, the current President of DreaMIT, the student group for undocumented students at MIT. Because DACA (like immigration enforcement overall) is essentially a practice of executive discretion, no one knows yet if and how it will change under the next administration. In late November, President Reif joined hundreds of other university Presidents in signing an open letter that described the “moral imperative” and “national necessity” of the program. Here in admissions, we have seen more questions from prospective undocumented students about whether they can still apply to and study at MIT, particularly as the Regular Action deadline approaches. The short answer is: yes, they can. As President Reif said, our policies and procedures have not changed. Undocumented students may still apply using the same application as everyone else, are still subject to the same evaluation as everyone else, are still held to the same standard as everyone else, and, upon admission, are still granted access to the same educational opportunities, campus community, and financial aid as everyone else.  Gerardo Garcia-Rios, Assistant Dean/Interim Co-Director in Student Support Services (S^3), is an advisor for all DACA students at MIT and works closely with them to help navigate the academic, personal and social aspect of their experience here. In order to further clarify and reaffirm our support for admitting and educating undocumented students, I wanted to share this letter, sent last week to the MIT community by Chancellor Cynthia Barnhart. The Chancellor wrote: The election has created uncertainty about the future of DACA and, as a result, understandable concern for our undocumented students. We have met with these students to understand and respond to their needs, and we will continue to do so. I say to you what we have said to them in person: MITs commitment to our undocumented students will not change. We will do everything we can that is legally permissible to continue to enroll undocumented students and ensure they have the same student life and learning experience as documented students. The Chancellor and Office of the General Counsel also published a document outlining institutional policies regarding undocumented students at MIT. It states: MIT is committed to making every effort to ensure, within the bounds of what is legally permissible, that the experience of undocumented students is as similar as possible to the experience of all other students. MITs financial commitment to them will continue with or without DACA, and MIT will ensure that no undocumented MIT students will lack the legal advice they need. The MIT Mission, which is a touchstone for the work we do in admissions, states that our mission is to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century. As an unofficial advisor to DreaMIT, I know how amazing our undocumented students are, how much they have contributed to MIT as students, and how much they have to contribute to the nation and the world afterward. I am glad that the Institute is reaffirming its support for our current undocumented students, and hope that this blog post helps clarify and communicate that to prospective undocumented students who, like so many of their friends and classmates, also dream to study at MIT.

In this assignment, I have been asked to reflect on my communication patterns and experiences whilst working within a group. This semester we were asked to work in small groups of 4 – 5 students to prepare a 20 minute information session on the ‘completion of documentation’, and perform a presentation in front of the class. In this assignment I will demonstrate my understanding of group dynamics and communication skills, reflect on my experience during the group activity, and briefly explain how the member contributions were divided up for the group presentation. Team members are described as â€Å"having complementary skills, being committed to a common purpose and holding themselves accountable for their performance (Tyrer, 2004). † These descriptions make it clear that teams are about working together as a group, and each member of the team has a purpose within the group, in working towards a common goal. Team members share goals and are mutually held accountable for meeting them (Canadian Health Services Research Foundation). † To be effective, team members must be flexible and tolerant. For successful teamwork, there must be open and effective communication between all of the team members. Open communication means that all members of the team have their chance to share ideas without being criticized. Establishing such communication between all members is vital for productivity and achievement of goals. â€Å"If effective, the team is more likely to utilize the full range of diverse knowledge and skills available (Tyrer, 2004). † Because the team is held collectively accountable, integrating with one another is expected and included in the responsibilities of each member. Unequal levels of participation between the members of the team may inhibit the smooth running of a team (Caldwell et al). Group working allows people’s individual skills and knowledge to merge, which compensates in areas where individual members are lacking. â€Å"It has been argued that teamwork offers greater adaptability and creativity than any one individual can offer, while promoting job satisfaction and staff retention. (Ream Xyrichis, 2007)† Many variables affect teamwork and team performance on group assignments; including the individual characteristics and personalities the students, the mode of delivery, and understanding of what teamwork involves. During the group work activity I learned how to work with different personalities. Everyone approached the topic differently. I think each group member brought a unique perspective to the group, which helped to create ideas and allowed the group to discuss each angle with each other. Although our group did not have a clear leader chosen at the start of our group work, I believe Rebecca held many of the essential qualities of a group leader. â€Å"The leader has the responsibility to develop team processes (for example, clarity of roles and support for the team) and create favourable performance conditions for the team (Canadian Health Services Research Foundation). Our group decided to divide the topic of ‘completion of documentation’ up into categories with subheadings (e. g. reasons for documentation, history of documentation, forms of documentation, errors in documentation, etc. ); each group member was then responsible for writing a paragraph on one bullet point, ensuring we distributed the work fairly among the group. However, we did all of the b rainstorming as a group and used group meetings to create outlines for the designated points each person was to follow. Once a draft was written, each group member edited it and gave comments, but final adjustments were left to the writer’s discretion. This was to ensure that our categories flowed nicely. We then met as a group and collectively created a PowerPoint presentation with the information we had gathered, instead of having one person doing the majority of the work. In between group meetings, we kept each other updated on our progress via emails. This allowed us to exchange information and share resources. We used email to keep in touch with team members as an easy way to get a hold of other members of the team in the fastest way possible. I found this effective as we were able to maintain contact during our busy weeks. Although I thought communicating via email was appropriate due to the colliding schedules of the group members, more direct observation of the team at work together as a group would be helpful in my assessment of the effectiveness of teamwork behaviours, and the writing of this paper. More frequent team meetings dedicated to the group presentation may have resulted in better communication, which could have allowed for better transfer of knowledge and therefore may have increased our team performance during the presentation. During group meetings, all members participated actively, trying to express their point of view. I think everyone had equal opportunity to voice their opinions and incorporate their ideas into the presentation. I thought working in a group setting was really valuable, which enabled us to expand our communication skills, and become more aware of our behaviour in group situations. In summary, Teamwork is the interaction or relationship of two or more people, who work interdependently towards a common goal. Team-based methods of working have many advantages. Team working has been viewed as a valuable way of improving performance, and quality of working life in a health care setting. Teamwork will accomplish a task more effectively and efficiently than an individual effort. Working in a team requires effective communication. For teamwork to be successful, it is important that every member of the team has patience or tolerance for the opinions of the rest of the team members. When members respect each other’s opinions, there will not only be an increase in productivity, but in teamwork itself. The development of an effective team requires a positive attitude and commitment toward teamwork, along with an understanding of what teamwork involves. The three models of case management consist of the first one being strength-based this was introduced in the 80’s, this assessment begins with the individuals strengths that can help the juvenile face their problems that they are facing. This assessment can prove to be very passive because it basically helps them recognize their own strength and allows them to build up off their own self-help. The second model for case management is assertive model which a treatment that collaborates both strength-based and assertive while also including the recovery approach, most of the help in this stage is from an outside provider but included the feel of the juveniles natural environment. The third model in case management is the mixed model, which is a combination of the former two models, in this approach the case manager assumes the role as sort of a service broker, this model serves the best because it deals with the individuals personality and their specific needs also when they are being cared for by the case manager. The strength-based case management assessment will teach coping skills, social skills, self-evaluating skills, and cognitive behavioral skills. Juveniles rely on treatment programs/leadership that are well organized, capable of addressing their specific needs, continuing/follow-up care, and privacy; basically an escape plan with a detailed point by point map. Family is a major factor for the growth of the juvenile or youth, as long as it is positive and will introduce a setback. â€Å"The strength-based perspective offers a wide range of philosophical and practical assistance in learning to value and activate strengths in youth who tend to be primarily regarded as â€Å"multi-problem† and â€Å"high risk. †- (Saleebey, 2001, p. 184). Juveniles needs a dose of reality so they can know what they got themselves into, and if the continue to do so what can happen to then down the line. I think trying to shield them from their own wrongs is not the answer. How will they ever learn? I know some see kids as being so innocent but the truth is they commit some of the most gruesome crimes there is. I think strength-based is very important when it comes to juveniles. Once they select the option that is best for them the sky is the limit as long as they stay on the straight and narrow path of doing right in life and keeping way from the wrong people and embracing family, friends, and other positive people in their life. â€Å"Social support is related to psychological well-being, meaning that the more a person feels he has friends and family who are there for him, the less likely he is to feel depressed and anxious (Turner, 1981). † The most effective type of â€Å"wraparound† program for a troubled child is a facility that is away from the home so they have to only themselves and the help to focus on while they are in treatment. With a facility dedicating al services to a troubled child with interventions available around the clock, academic tutoring, a discipline structure, and if the child is old enough to work there should be employment training to help the gain the knowledge and skills to become a productive citizen instead of a frequent law breaking citizen. As long as the child does not give up on the help given to better themselves and the counselors, support staff, therapist, family members and the child’s friends help them change for the better then the program can have maximum success.

This paper shares some examples of moral and ethical issues that a hiring manager faces during the recruitment process. During the hiring process it is important that the applicant is judged on merits alone. Merits are to include knowledge, skills, and ability in accordance to the needs of the organization (Gan, 2006). A hiring manager must interview all candidates that qualify and review each one of their abilities before making a decision on which is the best match for the position available. All candidates must be treated equally and given the same opportunity as other applicants. Basing a decision on who to hire for a position based on something other than their qualifications is an unethical issue that hiring managers face today. The first thing a hiring manager notices when a job seeker steps into his or her office for a sit down interview is the applicant’s appearance. Our world is overflowing with different people of different shapes and sizes. It is important for a manager not to judge an applicant by their appearance before they are given the opportunity to apply for the position. Jacob Gan, PhD (2006) states, â€Å"While preferential treatments to certain specific group may be allowed, there should be no discrimination to people from any other group due to race, religion, gender, marital or even pregnancy status.† Whether the hiring manager has a preference on who should or shouldn’t receive the position that must not get into the way of hiring someone that is more qualified for the position. If a company was to turn down an applicant that was qualified for the position based on their race, religion, gender, marital or pregnancy status the company could be looking at a lawsuit . This is considered discrimination in the workplace. As much as an applicant should not lie on their application, an employer should be honest when advertising their company. The company should not mislead people to work for them with-out being completely honest about all pertinent information. In Gan’s (2006) article he declares that, â€Å"We should not mislead the applicants. In particular, the applicants should be told all pertinent information, including that information that is not publicly known but that will materially affect the new employees future employment prospect with the organization.† For a relationship between a company and its employees to work, the employees must be happy with the company and vice versa. An issue has come forth of whether or not pre-employment drug testing is unethical. Pre-employment drug testing is done on all potential candidates who pass the interview process and move on to the next step in becoming an employee of that company (Hoopes, 2009). It is a decision of the company of whether they want to administer a pre-employment drug test or not. Companies that would choose to give a per-employment drug test would definitely have something to lose if something was to happen and the employee was under the influence of drugs. An example of this would be requiring an individual that works for the city to take a pre-employment and random drug tests. The main reason why cities would require this would be because their employees are often in a company vehicle. If an accident was to occur while the employee was under the influence of drugs; the company would not be covered under their insurance. The pre-employment drug test is given because the employer wants to make sure the interviewee understands that drug abuse would cause the company thousands of dollars in accident claims (Hoopes, 2009). Putting a person that is under the influence of drugs behind the wheel is just morally wrong anyways. One of the main concerns when a hiring manager is interviewing candidates for a position is abiding by the laws and regulations for practicing ethical hiring processes. A company cannot discriminate against someone due to their race, gender, or religion. The person that receives the position must be the candidate with the most qualifications, no exceptions. Also, the company should not mislead its applicants into accepting the position at hand. The company must reveal the true state of the organization to all job-seekers. It may not hide any pertinent information that will affect the new employee’s future with the organization. Drug testing is given by discretion of the company but can wind up costing the company more than a test would have. To avoid accidents and other drug related problems, the company should require the applicant to pass at least a urinary analysis exam. This playing around with structure is a big feature of Romantic music, and it shows an adventurous attitude towards the conventions of the time. The Berlioz piece is orchestral, and so there is not the advantage of voice to convey details of a dramatic narrative. The subtitle of the piece â€Å"March to the Scaffold† however, reveals the tragic scenario that Berlioz has in mind. A man of Scotland, a distinguished citizen of the United States, and a philanthropist devoted to the betterment of the world around him, Andrew Carnegie became famous at the turn of the twentieth century and became a real life rags to riches story. Born in Dunfermline, Scotland, on November 25, 1835, Andrew Carnegie entered the world in poverty. The son of a hand weaver, Carnegie received his only formal education during the short time between his birth and his move to the United States. When steam machinery for weaving came into use, Carnegie’s father sold his looms and household goods, sailing to America with his wife and two sons. At this time, Andrew was twelve, and his brother, Thomas, was five. Arriving into New York on August 14, 1848, aboard the Wiscasset from Glasgow, the Carnegies wasted little time settling in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh, where relatives already existed and were there to provide help. Allegheny City provided Carnegie’s first job, as a bobbin boy in a cotton factory, working for $1.20 a week. His father also worked there while his mother bound shoes at home, making a miniscule amount of money. Although the Carnegies lacked in money, they abounded in ideals and tr aining for their children. At age 15, Carnegie became a telegraph messenger boy in Pittsburgh. He learned to send and decipher telegraphic messages and became a telegraph operator at the age of 17. Carnegie’s next job was as a railroad clerk, working for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He worked his way up the ladder, through his dedication and honest desire to succeed, to become train dispatcher and then division manager. At this time, young Carnegie, age 24, had already made some small investments that laid the foundations of his what would be tremendous fortune. One of these investments was the purchase of stock in the Woodruff Sleeping Car Company. In 1864, Carnegie entered the iron business, but did not begin to make steel until years later. In 1873, he built the Edgar Thomson works in Braddock, Pennsylvania, to make Bessemer steel. He established many other steel plants, and in 1892, he merged all of his interests into the Carnegie Steel Company. This act from Carnegie is fitting with one of his most famous quotations, "Put all of your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket." Response to the book “The Body’s Memory” Essay

The recollection made by a person with disability or PWD of the most painful things which her body felt and experienced was explicitly depicted in the 1993 book of Jean Stewart entitled â€Å"The Body’s Memory. † The most notable aside from the clear presentation of the true condition and emotions of PWD, however, is the remarkable realization exemplified by the character. The character’s clear yet flexible and uncomplaining reminiscence of the pains and sacrifices of her body which was afflicted and removed with tumor was the ultimate significance of the book. This is because a PWD’s acceptance of the undeniable or irreversible state of her body strongly manifests that indeed the physical condition serves as the lasting reminder of disability. However, it is the will and the desire to overcome such disability which will ultimately allow a PWD to continue living. Stewart’s first appearance in the literary world showcased the character of a 30-year-old woman named Kate Meredith who recounted her body’s management and survival three years after a tumor was removed from her hip. Through the course of the recollection, Meredith’s body was faced with and most importantly reminded of its inevitable limitations resulting from the surgery which eventually made her a disabled person for the rest of her life (Stewart, 1989). The preface alone already hinted both the disposition and worth of this journal of one’s battle against her disability and ultimate triumph over the physical condition. As the journal went on, the author’s invitation led the readers into the painful yet struggling efforts of a lively and strong-willed English professor Meredith (Stewart, 1989). Through the words of the author, the readers came in contact and had a peek of the kind of life that Meredith has lived following her tumor removal. Stewart allowed the public to be acquainted with the people around Meredith, to feel and sympathize with her physical and emotional sufferings and above all, witness her understanding or acceptance and eventual rise above her permanent physical condition (Stewart, 1989). It is worthy to consider that the author has effectively presented the strong character of Meredith whose memory or precise account of her body’s pain caused by disability surprisingly paved the way for the meeting of two worlds, that of the normal people and persons with disability. In order to thoroughly feel the personal battle fought by Meredith, the author’s use of the journal type as the writing structure has succeeded for the character to vividly recall the pains suffered by her body. Additionally, the said literary form has efficiently conveyed the essence of the story, which is the acceptance of the body’s memory of disability suffering as well as the eventual realization of the existing disability and improvement towards the reality of living independently. The Meredith journal, as written by Stewart, is a concrete proof of a triumphant tale of a PWD whose body will definitely always remember the pain. However, she used such memory as a tool to overcome her limitation and started living on her own. The book is an ideal chronicle from the point of view of a previously normal person who was faced with the reality of never to walk once more. It is one of the best works that depicted a different perspective about the everyday happenings in the life of a person with disability. Utilizing the vehicle of journal writing, the author invited the readers to the world of a PWD and succeeded in making both her main character and the public experience all the emotional confusions, physical battle, disappointments, bravery, apprehension, self-pity and rejection.
